ABA Position

ABA believes Congress should pass data security legislation that holds retailers and others to high, uniform, nationwide standards for safeguarding sensitive customer information. Banks have had such an oblication to protect their customer's sensitive financial information for years. ABA also is advocating that those responsible for data breaches should be responsible for their costs.

Get Involved

Legislation must be enacted this Congress to provide better protection of consumer information. ABA supports the enactment of S. 961/H.R. 2205, the Data Security Act, introduced by Sens. Thomas Carper (D-DE) and Roy Blunt (R-MO) and by Reps. Randy Neugebauer (R-TX) and John Carney (D-DE), which would ensure that all involved in the payments system are protecting customers' personal information.
